We carried out some terrestrial 3D laser scanning of a telecoms project and created a ScanToBIM model using a mixture of LOD 200/300. The digital data was required for redesign work and the upgrading of equipment.
Capturing the data digitally and creating a model aided the planning and design phase of the project as follows:
1. enabled clash detection to be carried out
2. mitigated risks involved with the project
3. facilitated better design
4. improved collaboration w
The use of traditional methods for collecting data on electricity pylons in the utility sector could be coming to an end. Methods such as helicopters and human inspection can be very expensive, slow, dangerous, timely, difficult to capture and analyse.
Rather than a manually inspecting each pylon, the use of drone technology and AI allows for targeted manual inspection drastically reducing costs, speeding up the inspection process and improving safety.

It was great to work with Kier Group on this Ministry of Justice UK project where we used terrestrial 3D laser scanning technology as part of a build validation exercise comparing the as-build vs design models.
Terrestrial 3D laser scanning collected millions of individual point measurements of the concrete voids and those measurements were then plotted within a single XYZ coordinate system to form a 'point cloud' of the surfaces.
