3D laser scanning and 3D BIM model of project for redesign work
We carried out some 3D laser scanning and created a 3D BIM model of a project as a lot of redesign work was required. The reason for doing this at the planning and design phase was: it allows for clash detection, mitigates risk, facilitates better design, improves collaboration which ultimately saves the client time and money on the project. Who doesn’t want to improve their margins.
Our client required a highly accurate and detailed point cloud of all objects and structures onsite for re-design work. Using 3D laser scanning we were quickly and accurately able to collect millions of individual point measurements. The measurements are then plotted within a single XYZ coordinate system to form a 'point cloud' of the surfaces. With the addition of GPS data these points were geo-referenced and transformed into a global reference system. We produced a dense point cloud for the client accurate to within 4mm.
We then created a 3D BIM model or REVIT model which gives our client the insights and tools necessary to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage the project.
